When your heating and cooling system is getting old and nearing the end of its life, the factor that will cause you to be forced to replace your system will typically be one of two things. Either your compressor will no longer be working or your evaporator coil will have a leak. In order to combat the problem with leaky evaporator coils, Trane has developed a series of aluminum coils. The problem with the typical copper coil is that the tubes are made of copper and the plates on the ends are made of steel and when these two metals touch they create corrosion which eats holes in the copper over time and creates multiple small leaks. You can see in the picture on the right an example of a copper coil with corrosion. What Trane has done to combat this issue is to manufacture coils with aluminum tubes and aluminum end plates. This way the coil doesn’t corrode and you can significantly decrease the likelihood of leaks as you can see in the picture on the left. Some other manufactures that use copper coils with steel end plates see failure rates of 30% in the first 5 years.
