Forty-two years ago when I started in air conditioning, units were very simple. What we expected was also very basic. If the house was 20 degrees cooler than outside, we were fine. No one worried if one room was warmer than the others. We were happy if we weren’t burning up.
Many people are still fine with that.
Air conditioning
can offer so much more than that today. We now offer variable capacity units. There are units today that have only two stages, or up to 750 stages. We now offer true comfort.
What is true comfort? Well, it’s not only the correct temperature. It is the same temperature throughout the whole entire house. It’s humidity control, constant air flow, and we even can do fresh air.
The thing that is exciting to me right now is DC power. DC, or direct current A/C units, are new. DC motors have been used in trains and earth movers for years. Why is this such a big deal? It is because DC motors offer full torque at all RPM’s. They are much more efficient than AC motors.
Trane’s newest and best units, like the Trane XV20i, are now DC. This allows the unit to operate at just the capacity you need. It provides a cool, constant air flow that offers true comfort, true comfort at efficiencies that I never dreamed of even 10 years ago. So what am I talking about when I use the word “efficiency?”
This means you don’t hear the unit starting and stopping all day long. It comes on early in the morning and runs into the night without turning off. The unit becomes the exact size you need at that exact moment. If you need a 2.335-ton unit that is exactly what it gives you, not a 5-ton unit that comes on, flows air like mad, and then shuts off – nice constant cool air, quietly, and efficiently.
