Ecobee Smart Thermostat
Air conditioner manufacturers are always trying to come out with high efficiency systems and options that increase comfort while decreasing utility costs. One part of a heating and cooling system that is often overlooked is your thermostat. The majority of us have just a simple standard thermostat on the wall. Whether you have a simple (non-programmable) thermostat or a nicer programmable thermostat, it probably doesn’t do anything to help save money on your utility bills.

The owner of a series of manufacturing factories in the early 2000s searched for a thermostat that would help to save energy in the way it operated. He was unsuccessful so he ventured to engineer his own line of thermostats to use in his factories. Ecobee was born and has been saving energy costs ever since. This manufacturer has now been selling Ecobee thermostats across the US and Canada since 2007. This thermostat is fully programmable in a much more flexible way than any other programmable thermostat before it. It also optimizes the way the temperature rises and falls at each
temperature change in the program to save you the most energy and money possible. Most thermostats will suddenly change the set temperature at each change in the program, but the Ecobee thermostat will slowly adjust the temperature to save the most electricity/gas possible. Here is a picture of the performance of the thermostat in our own office at D&D Mechanical as it cooled our office before we arrived on the morning of July 10th.

As you can see, the thermostat does not start cooling suddenly with the change in programming that occured at 6 a.m. but slowly cooled in order to keep the humidity down. Keeping the humidity down saves energy dramatically and since your cooling cost accounts for 70% of your electric bill, that puts a large dent in the quest for energy conservation. This is just one way the Ecobee thermostat saves you money.
